If the client asks to show the result of the work immediately

This article is part of an internal studio lecture.

Originally the question sounded like this:

Reverse situation: show now, faster, asap) What to do: do not show, agree to show in iterations?

First of all, you should find out the reason for the rush. This will help you understand what exactly they want to see faster. Perhaps the client just needs to know that the work is going on and everything is in order. Perhaps there was a need to report on the work to a higher authority.

Whatever the situation, it is never a good idea to show shoddy work. It may be incomplete, but without dirt, garbage, fake data, or anything else. No one is ready to imagine in their mind what the work will look like at the end. Usually the imagination will either enhance the picture, or on the contrary, it will darken it.

If there is a finished part of the work, you can show it. If there is nothing good yet, then say that now nothing is ready to such an extent that it is possible to show, everything is in working condition and rather unpresentable. Usually, even with such words, the desire to look at the intermediate result disappears.

If they insist, you can try to take time to prepare materials for shipment.

If they demand it right away, I advise you to reconsider the relationship with this client and the continuation of work with him in general.

You can try to find out the reason for this rush. If it turns out that it is necessary to show this particular manager and you are on good relations with him, then warn him that this is a working version, that it can and will be changed a lot, as the final result depends heavily on the current work. In this case you can show it.

If the manager needs to report to his bosses, he should be warned that it is not possible to show it in its current form, as it may reflect badly on the manager himself, if he comes to his bosses with such a result. It is better to ask to take time to make the picture presentable (up to marking incomplete areas with orange construction tape to make it obvious that work is in progress there). And after preparing a presentable look of the intermediate result of the work, you can show it.
